Radio Astronomical Polarimetry and Point-source Calibration
نویسنده
چکیده
A mathematical framework is presented for use in the experimental determination of the polarimetric response of observatory instrumentation. Elementary principles of linear algebra are applied to model the full matrix description of the polarization measurement equation by least-squares estimation of non-linear, scalar parameters. The formalism is applied to calibrate the center element of the Parkes Multibeam receiver using observations of the millisecond pulsar, PSRJ0437−4715, and the radio galaxy, 3C 218 (Hydra A). Subject headings: methods: data analysis — instrumentation: polarimeters — polarization — pulsars: individual (PSR J0437-4715) — techniques: polarimetric

In radio astronomy the polarimetric properties of radiation are often modified during propagation and reception. Effects such as Faraday rotation, receiver cross-talk, and differential amplification act to change the state of polarized radiation. A general description of such transformations is useful for the investigation of these effects and for the interpretation and calibration of polarimet...
متن کاملAstronomical Applications for " Radial Polarimetry "
Many objects on the sky exhibit a centrosymmetric polarization pattern, particularly in cases involving single scattering around a central source. Utilizing a novel liquid crystal device (the “theta cell”) that transforms the coordinate system of linear polarization in an image plane from Cartesian to polar, the observation of centrosymmetric polarization patterns can be improved: instead of me...
متن کاملRadio Astronomical Polarimetry and Phase-coherent Matrix Convolution
A new phase-coherent technique for the calibration of polarimetric data is presented. Similar to the one-dimensional form of convolution, data are multiplied by the response function in the frequency domain. Therefore, the system response may be corrected with arbitrarily high spectral resolution, effectively treating the problem of bandwidth depolarization. As well, the original temporal resol...
متن کاملX-Ray Polarimetry: Historical Remarks and Other Considerations
We briefly discuss the history of X-ray polarimetry for astronomical applications including a guide to the appropriate statistics. We also provide an introduction to some of the new techniques discussed in more detail elsewhere in these proceedings. We conclude our discussion with our concerns over adequate ground calibration, especially with respect to unpolarized beams, and at the system level.
متن کاملPolarimetric Calibration of Large-Aperture Telescopes II: The sub-aperture method
A new method for absolute polarimetric calibration of large telescopes is presented. The proposed method is highly accurate and is based on the calibration of a small sub-aperture, which is then extended to the full system by means of actual observations of an astronomical source. The calibration procedure is described in detail along with numerical simulations that explore its robustness and a...
